From Buenos Aires to the NFL Draft: My Semester of Saying “Yes”

As my senior year at UNC-Chapel Hill comes to a close in less than two months (don't remind me!), I’ve taken a moment to reflect on the whirlwind of experiences that have shaped this final chapter. This semester, I made a conscious decision to embrace new opportunities, push my comfort zone, and say "yes" to the unexpected. What resulted was a transformative few months that took me across the globe, from the bustling streets of New York to the rolling landscapes of rural Argentina and the open waters of Costa Rica, and soon, the buzz of the NFL Draft in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

Saying Yes to Argentina: Advocacy Through Storytelling

One of the most meaningful "yes" moments came when I had the chance to travel to Argentina with UNC Global Storytelling and help raise awareness about illegal waste management routines just outside of Buenos Aires. This experience allowed me to merge my passion for storytelling with real-world impact. Witnessing the environmental and social effects of open-air dumps firsthand, I worked to create content that highlighted the need for change, amplifying the voices of those affected.

Saying Yes to New York: Learning from the Best in Advertising

Another defining experience was traveling to New York to meet with top advertising agencies with UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media's Advertising Club. As someone passionate about marketing and media, the opportunity to step inside these industry powerhouses was nothing short of inspiring. I gained invaluable insights from leading creatives and strategists, reinforcing my aspirations for a career in this fast-paced field. More importantly, it was a reminder that the boldest moves often lead to the greatest rewards.

Saying Yes to Costa Rica: Chasing Adventure Offshore

Not all my "yes" moments were about professional growth -- some were about embracing adventure. A trip to Costa Rica introduced me to offshore fishing for the first time on a boat filled with people who I love, an experience that combined adrenaline, patience, and the thrill of the unknown. During my time as a mass communications intern for The Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament, I wanted nothing but to find myself out there in the water — now I can say that I've done it! As the boat cut through the waves, I felt a deep appreciation for stepping beyond my everyday routine and immersing myself in something entirely new.

Saying Yes to Green Bay: The NFL Draft Awaits

Perhaps the most exciting challenge ahead is working the National Football League (NFL) Draft in Green Bay, WI next month with On Location as an Event Operations Intern. Saying "yes" to this opportunity means stepping into one of the biggest events in sports. It’s a chance to learn, network, and be part of something truly monumental in the sports world. Moreover, it's something that little Ella would've died over if she knew that one day, she'd be able to have a hand in making this event be a memorable one for those who attend it.

Pushing Past Fear: The Thrill of Controlled Spontaneity

Saying "yes" wasn’t always easy. There were moments of hesitation, fear of the unknown, and the nagging doubt of whether I was making the right choices. But if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that fear and excitement often go hand-in-hand. I thrive in the space between structure and spontaneity, where professional decisions lead to bold opportunities, ensuring that every adventure is both intentional and exhilarating.

The Power of Saying Yes

Looking back, this semester has been a testament to the power of embracing the unknown. Every experience, whether professional, personal, or adventurous, has reinforced the idea that growth happens outside of comfort zones. As graduation approaches, I carry with me the lessons, connections, and memories forged through these moments of saying "yes."

If this semester has taught me anything, it’s that the best opportunities often lie just beyond hesitation. Here’s to continuing to say "yes" to life’s next great adventure.
